One of our long-time Pohick Station HOA residents, Janet Scheren, is a certified Fairfax County Master Gardener, and we're happy to report that she will be bringing a group of Master Gardeners to our Fairfax Station East neighborhood for some fun-filled and informative Fall Festival events on a couple of upcoming Saturday afternoons.
These Fall Festival events will take place on September 25 and October 16, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm, and will be held in the cul-de-sac at the bottom of Pohick Station Drive.
This will be an opportunity to have all of your lawn and gardening questions answered. The group of Fairfax County Master Gardeners will staff two booths, and they will be conducting demonstrations, scavenger hunts for kids, a tree identification activity, and multiple workshops. They will also have informational handouts and will provide links to additional resources. The specific workshops that will be offered (at no cost, courtesy of the Fairfax County Master Gardeners) are:
Workshops for September 25
• Natives and Invasives in Our Yards
1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Walk though a yard and along the path to identify some of the wonderful native plants as well as invasive plants that can go wild in your yard in a bad way. We’ll discuss how to eradicate some of the problem plants.
• Home Landscaping
2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Learn some basic principles of home landscaping. We’ll start with looking at what’s working in your yard and what’s not, investigate how you want to use your yard, and identify some next steps to begin to make changes. There is still time to implement landscaping changes in the fall, but it also gets you thinking in time to implement a plan in spring.
Workshops for October 16
• Home Grown Food
1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Whether you are motivated by these uncertain times or just want to eat healthier and more delicious food, this workshop will talk about some of the best and easiest fruits, vegetables, and greens to grow in your yard. We’ll cover how to prep a garden bed, growing from seed or transplants, feeding and watering your garden, and other related issues. This is the perfect time to make garden beds and plan what you’d like to grow in 2022. That puts you in time to buy seeds over the winter and be ready for spring.
• Winter/Seasonal Interest
2:00 - 3:00 p.m
Using cold frames for late fall and winter vegetable gardening, planting for winter interest and holiday joy!
Please see the attached flyer for additional details. As we get closer to the events, these flyers will be printed and distributed, and signs will be put up around the neighborhood as well. In the meantime, if you have any questions, you may contact Janet via email at scherenj@gmail.com. So be sure and mark your calendars for these two dates, Sep 25 and Oct 16, and join us at the bottom of Pohick Station Drive, starting at noon, for what will be fun events with great activities for both adults and kids alike!
